Arriving in Muhu on a beautiful hot July day, at the home of one of the best Muhutikandi masters, Leida Kirstu, he first took us to his garden and flowers. Among the greenery, eye-catchers stood out – red poppies. Leida has also captured these magnificent flowers in her beautiful embroideries.
Of all the beautiful embroidered items, my favorite was the pillow with a large red poppy. The petals twist and curve really and naturally, the core with its pearly stamens looks real, and the colors of the poppy flower radiate a real summer warmth from the pillow. How is it possible to embroider a poppy so that the folds of the petals are also visible?
However, looking at the flower's leaves and stem, everyone believes that they are beautifully hairy. The short flowering period of the proud poppy flower is confirmed by the embroidered poppy bud and a new bud that opens the next morning.
Admiring all this craftsmanship, I wanted to try it myself. Take some fabric, a needle, and some threads and start embroidering. Poppy!
And this is what it became. My poppy, which will always remind me of Muhumaa, Leida and her embroideries.
